Job Description:

The Natural Resources Law Section advises and represents California state agencies, boards, and commissions with responsibility for natural resources management and pollution control. Consequently the section’s attorneys appear in important, highly visible actions. They represent the Air Resources Board, the State Water Resources Control Board, the Regional Water Quality Control Boards, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Fish and Game Commission, the Department of Water Resources, CAL FIRE, the Department of Pesticide Regulation, CalRecycle, the Department of Food and Agriculture, the state’s District Agricultural Associations (fairs), and other state entities. The subject matter of the representation includes air pollution, water quality, surface water and groundwater rights, water supply, CEQA, endangered species, fire suppression cost recovery, pollution cleanup and recovery, pesticide standards, recycling, agricultural matters, and business matters such as bankruptcy, collections, contracts, and white collar fraud.

Job Responsibilities:

Duties include, but are not limited to: representing clients as both plaintiff and defendant in all stages of litigation, including handling petitions for writs of mandate, complex cases, and enforcement matters; preparing and responding to discovery requests; witness interviews, hiring and working with expert witnesses, deposition preparation, taking and defending depositions; preparing and arguing motions in court; administrative hearings and jury and bench trials in state and federal court; preparing appellate briefs and arguing in appellate courts, including the Supreme Courts; working cooperatively and effectively in a team and with client agencies; performing a variety of legal and other research; drafting settlement agreements; conducting mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution; and working collaboratively with federal and local government attorneys and attorneys general in other states. In this position, successful candidates will have demonstrated work experience preparing for, managing, and conducting all stages of bench and jury trials in state or federal courts, including pre-trial depositions, preparing and questioning expert and fact witnesses, discovery, and motion practice.
