SoCalGas Internship – Region Associate Engineer

Job Description:

Provides engineering support to the Region Engineer, Technical Services’ Planning Office and Field Operation for system analysis, construction planning, emergency response, gas measurement and regulation, and various technical projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs analysis/conceptual design for long term planning of the region’s distribution system including projections for 5, 10, 15 year forecast loading.
  • Performs research, engineering and long-term economic analyses, gas pipeline network computer modeling and develops written recommendations including pipe size, pressure testing/operating levels, general routing and gas procedures, equipment specifications.
  • Maintains system models, develops system models when needed, and supports staff in development of system models
  • Provides guidance on the application of engineering methods in the areas of pipeline design, system design and construction planning. Maintain familiarity with Company operations and procedures to effectively support client requests.
  • Provides training and work direction for engineering student interns and/or engineering contractors.
  • Maintains/publishes the Annual Pressure Report and Supply Line Summary for the region.
  • Performs analysis/design for large customer MSAs and Regulator Stations.
  • Supports staff in the analysis for maintaining BTU District Boundary integrity and revising boundary descriptions when appropriate.
  • Performs analysis; provides recommendations on pipe sizing, routing, shutdowns, etc., for routine and emergency requests for engineering review.
  • Performs engineering calculations/responses for gas loss volumes on pipeline damages/blowdowns.

Job Requirements:

  • Must be able to manage and implement multiple projects and to coordinate assigned activities in support of projects being performed by the Region Engineer.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively interact with Regional personnel, as well as various other departments and outside companies, to maintain open lines of communication.
  • Knowledge of project management software tools, spreadsheets, CAD, GIS, mainframe, networks and database analyses tools.
  • Must be able to prepare written communications on technical/non-technical matters to communicate specific information to the Region
  • Engineering Group, Planning Office and Field Operations.
  • Able to work smoothly and effectively with multiple teams.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.
  • Knowledge of general engineering practices and concepts and basic business principles.
  • Current CA Driver’s License required.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification preferred.
  • Apply engineering principles to analyze and resolve problems.
  • Quantitative Methodology: Must be able to prepare detailed engineering calculations and analyses.
  • Good understanding of fluid mechanics and dynamics/hydraulics and piping systems.
