Job Description:

Metro Health is seeking to hire an Assistant Director for Community Health & Safety. The Assistant Director is responsible for the management of a large and complex division within the department using prevention programs for cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes, perinatal support services, teen pregnancy prevention activities, community nutrition programs including WIC, school oral health interventions, as well as violence prevention initiatives addressing domestic violence, child abuse and gun violence. The Community Health & Safety AD will also actively engage other community health promoting agencies. The successful candidate will be expected to play a significant leadership role in assisting the Director to maximize department performance and develop effective relationships with other elements of local government and partners in the community.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists in managing the development and implementation of department goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for each assigned service area
  • Monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedure; identifies opportunities for improvement, and directs the implementation of changes
  • Oversees the development of grant proposals and programs
  • Responds to sensitive inquiries and/or complaints
  • Attends City Council meetings and takes necessary action regarding Council agenda items
  • Provides staff support and technical assistance to a variety of boards, committees, and commissions.
  • Coordinates activities with community groups and health providers under non-emergency and emergency conditions
  • Assesses and monitors workload, administrative/support systems, and internal reporting relationships
  • Serves as an official departmental representative to other City departments, the City Manager’s Office, elected officials and outside agencies
  • Serves as a member of the department’s executive leadership team

Job Requirements:

  • Qualified candidates will have a Master’s Degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Public Health, Administration or Epidemiology, with emphasis in health care systems, or other related field. They will also have five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in public health administration and three (3) years of supervisory experience. The most highly qualified candidates for consideration will be selected based on a combination of education, career experience, and accomplishments that best fits the needs of the City of San Antonio.
