Job Responsibilities:

This position will assist the City’s Traffic Engineer in the operation, repair, and maintenance of the City’s ITS infrastructure which includes traffic signals, roadside flashers, RR wayside horns, roadway lighting systems, and other traffic related devices. Supervises traffic division CIP construction projects. Performs related work as required

Job Requirements:

  • Ability in maintenance, troubleshooting, installation, and setup of ITS equipment which includes traffic signals, hardware, traffic controllers, MMUs, battery backup systems, railroad monitoring devices, portable/permanent dynamic message signs, luminaires, in pavement lights, preemption devices, point tilt zoom cameras, wayside horns, school zone beacons, magnetometers, and radar speed signs.
  • Performs yearly maintenance on all devices per division standards. Install and repair equipment and perform duties such as pulling cable, digging, concrete core drilling, and hanging hardware 20 feet to 40 feet high.
  • Assist with special events in coordination with Traffic Management Center (TMC) to help move traffic by manual traffic signals.
  • Utilize Advanced Traffic Management (ATMS) software to troubleshoot issues and assist in monitoring of all ITS systems.
  • Document work reports in the asset management system and help track inventory of material used.
  • Setup/configure ITS devices using serial or Ethernet connections. Stay abreast in learning multiple software configuration programs to complete tasks.
  • Attend training classes to learn MUTCD guidelines that relate to typical duties such as proper traffic control placement, proper traffic signal head configurations and traffic signal signage.
  • Collects traffic data including turning movement counts, 24-hour counts, travel time studies, delay studies, gap studies, and other data as needed. Sets and retrieves automatic traffic recorder machines, dumps data and prepares reports.
  • Assists in inspections and completion of traffic signal construction projects in the City.
  • Assist in management of High Mast Lighting contract. Issue and supervise contractor to insure all work is completed per City standard.
  • Assist in ROW permit process by locating and marketing traffic infrastructure as needed.
  • Responds to inquiries/complaints regarding traffic control devices.
  • Operates a wide array of hand and power tools. Will also operate light commercial trucks and equipment with trailers. Position is responsible for the maintenance and safe operation of this equipment. Lift equipment and materials up to 80 pounds without assistance into vehicles to transport to work sites and lifting 100 lb. generator with assistance.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war.
  • Stay abreast of, and comply with, all City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform any other duties and responsibilities as assigned to assist Field Supervisor in completing assignments that are given by City Traffic Engineer or Public Works Management
