Job Description:

Under general supervision, performs professional water quality monitoring and laboratory analysis work, develops laboratory operating procedures, performs sampling, laboratory analysis and reporting work in conformance with applicable standards, legal and technical requirements and policies.

Under direction, helps develop and implement operating policies, procedures, forms and controls for use in laboratory sampling, analysis, and testing procedures. Coordinates laboratory sampling, inspecting, analyzing, with other departments and external agencies. Maintains laboratory files and records. Researches, provides information and other administrative support to laboratory supervisor on laboratory subjects. Maintains data and records needed to produce on going program analyses and reports. Assists laboratory supervisor to identify and implement program training needs. Prepares drafts of public information materials on water and wastewater chemical, biological and bacteriological requirements and operations.

Job Responsibilities:

Participates in the general administrative operations of the division and the District. Assumes responsibility for covering a part of the work assignments of the laboratory supervisor, and other members of the laboratory staff during short absences. Responds to inquiries and requests from the public, customers, and outside organizations. Participates in District related civic events, and activities of community and professional organizations; attends meetings and makes presentations. Participates in District committees and staff functions. Performs other assigned work which is consistent with the responsibilities assigned to the classification and necessary to the operations of the division and the District.

Job Requirements:

A combination of training and experience which demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed). A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:

Three (3) years of experience in professional chemical laboratory analysis work at least one (1) of which included direct involvement with water and wastewater analysis and regulations.

  • Principles, practices and functions of laboratory operations in public utility water and wastewater quality control.
  • Legal and regulatory requirements applicable water and wastewater treatment.
  • Wastewater treatment processes and chemical, biological or bacteriological action involved in each process.
  • Basic construction and design of heavy mechanical treatment and processing systems.
  • Safety procedures and practices in hazardous environments.
  • Sampling methodology under Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocols.
  • Principles and applications of flow measuring devices.
