Job Description:

The Legal Division of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (Board) is hiring paid summer law clerks for the summer of 2025. The Board, an independent agency of the federal government, serves as the nation’s central bank and conducts monetary policy; maintains the stability of the U.S. financial system; supervises and regulates a wide range of banking institutions, including systemically important financial institutions; and provides key financial services to depository institutions.

The Board’s Legal Division offers attorneys opportunities to work on challenging legal issues relating to federal regulation of the nation’s banking system, including providing legal analysis and advice regarding mergers and acquisitions, and developing and implementing policies related to, among other things, banking supervision and consumer protection, payments systems, and the discount window. Attorneys also defend and prosecute ligation in which the Board is a party; engage in enforcement actions and investigations undertaken by the Board; and provide legal analysis and advice on matters relating to the management of the Board. The Legal Division is comprised of approximately 90 attorneys working in three primary groups: Banking Regulation and Policy; Litigation, Enforcement, and System Matters; and Monetary and Consumer Affairs and Summer Law Clerks will work on assignments in all three primary groups.

Job Responsibilities:

Conducts legal research (e.g., statutes, regulations, case law, policies).
Writes memoranda, correspondence, case law briefs, and legislative summaries.
Attends and participates in client meetings.The work requires the ability to conduct legal research on applicable statutes, regulations, caselaw, and policies and apply that research to the issues presented by the matter/question and reach logical and well-reasoned conclusions.he work requires the ability to produce well-written work product that presents the substantive legal argument in a well-organized, logically-structured and persuasive manner. There is frequent contact with all levels of Division management as well as staff of other divisions and offices, staff of the Reserve Banks, other government agencies,

  • The summer program includes social events across the vibrant Washington, D.C. area.
  • Summer Law Clerks are paired with junior and senior members of Legal Division staff, for mentoring purposes, and to facilitate introductions and connections.
  • Summer Law Clerks can anticipate an offer upon successful completion of summer program.Applicant must be a rising 2L (graduating class of 2025)
