Job Description:

Reporting to the General Manager, External Portfolios and Risk Management, the Director, Pension Risk Management has secondary responsibility for and is actively involved in all aspects of pension risk management. This role leads and supports the analysis and evaluation of investment and market risks as well as risks related to pension operations. The Director will mitigate the risk exposures of the underlying investments as well as overall operational risks. Preparation of internal reports and monitoring documents is required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducts due diligence of various service providers of risk management platforms as well as software to assist with operations such as data warehousing, cash management, liquidity, and collateral management.
  • Asset and liability management are the main focus and interest rate risk is partially mitigated with the implementation of a bond overlay strategy. Thus, liquidity, collateral management and counterparty risks must be monitored and carefully managed.
  • Lead a small team to identify and monitor the principal risks of the pension plan from an investment, market, and operations perspective.
  • Advising the General Manager, External Portfolios and Risk Management on strategies to mitigate those identified risks.
  • Makes presentations to the Vice-President, Pension and Chief Information Officer, Pension Committee and/or Investment Advisory Committee of the Plan’s risk exposures both from an investment and operations perspective.
  • May act as the sole representative of the General Manager, External Portfolios and Risk Management, at meetings related to risk management platforms and operational risks.
  • Remains abreast of changes in the risk management industry to ensure Canada Post Pension Plan employs best practices regarding risk management.
  • Manages a highly skilled investment team and provides thought leadership, coaching and guidance, related to performance management, talent and succession planning and engagement.
  • Researches potential new risk management platforms and approaches that are consistent with Canada Post Pension Plan’s strategy.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Excellent team building and leadership skills and experience
  • Designation and or certifications programs may be considered an asset
  • Experience managing small teams of Risk professionals
  • Experience completing direct investments, as well as fund investments, would be an asset
  • 5 or more years’ experience working in a pension risk environment
  • Proficient computer skills and competent with Microsoft Office programs
  • Sound organizational, analytical, judgement and decision-making skills with proven abilities in problem solving
  • Completion of an Undergraduate degree is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – proven ability to make concise and informative presentations
  • Minimum 10-years’ progressive experience in risk management
  • A Master of Business Administration or Certification as a Certified Financial Accountant is preferred.
  • Experience working with investment committees and Board of Directors
