Job Description:

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has a vacancy for an Attorney 1 in the Legal Bureau, located in Des Moines, IA. This position will provide legal counsel to the Department, the Natural Resource Commission, and the Environmental Protection Commission on various natural resource and environmental laws, including emerging legal issues around environmental justice

Specifically, this position will serve as the Department’s Environmental Justice coordinator and advise the Department in its development of environmental justice best practices and principles and ensure compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Additionally, the position will conduct legal research on environmental and natural resource matters, prepare legal memorandums summarizing findings and provide both written and verbal opinions to staff, management, and the Natural Resource Commission and Environmental Protection Commission.

Job Responsibilities:

• Read, analyze, and understand State and Federal regulations, administrative rules, and procedures – and apply them as required.
• Conduct legal research and give legal advice in both oral and written formats.
• Conduct meetings, negotiations and lead investigations.
• Draft legal documents applying knowledge of administrative and civil procedure, law and rules of evidence.
• Manage client needs and matters and overall case load with professionalism, discretion, and integrity.

Job Requirements:

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of law to qualify for positions in this job classification.

Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, employees in this class may be required to be admitted to Iowa State Bar if required at the time of appointment.
