Commerce is comprised of seven operating divisions and two standalone programs that span a variety of industries including real estate, liquor, banking, securities, firefighting, construction and skilled trades. Through exceptional compliance practices and oversight, Commerce has a direct role in protecting Ohioans.

Job Responsibilities:

As an ideal candidate, you should have executive leadership skills, financial expertise, and a proven ability to champion the agency’s mission and vision across a variety of audiences and situations. You will guide the financial planning and fiscal governance for Commerce’s funds.

As the Chief Fiscal Officer (CFO) and member of the Senior Staff, your responsibilities will include:

  • Directing all fiscal operations for Commerce, including Fiscal’s three teams: Accounting, Budget and Procurement.
  • Providing guidance to Commerce’s Senior Staff regarding financial policies for which the agency is responsible.
  • Succinctly communicating complex financial information to leadership and decision makers.
  • Developing and implementing Commerce’s budget annually, establishing and maintaining budget controls for divisions within the agency, and monitoring forecasts and performance throughout the fiscal year.
  • Developing and reviewing accounting systems and analyzing accountability requirements.
  • Overseeing preparation and maintenance of reports, records, and studies related to fiscal operations (e.g., financial reports, financial analyses, financial statements, budget forecasts, cost projections, revenue and expenditure comparisons, cost allocation plans, personal services contracts)
  • Testifying and representing Commerce at legislative meetings, public hearings, and on committees, as needed.

Job Requirements:

Proven ability to distill large amounts of complex data into succinct explanations for a broad audience.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with a highly collaborative working style and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Robust financial management, project management and analytical skills.
Strong listening skills and the ability to drive positive employee engagement.
Ability to interface effectively with all levels of the organization as well as external stakeholders.
OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Finance, Accounting, Operations Management, Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field AND a minimum of 10 years of combined experience in finance, accounting, corporate audit, compliance or controllership.
Graduate degree from an accredited university or college in Finance, Accounting, Operations Management, Public Administration, Business Administration or a related field AND a minimum of 5 years of combined experience in finance, accounting, corporate audit, compliance or controllership.
Three or more years of strong leadership experience.
Change agent with proven talent for streamlining back-office administration and increasing operational efficiencies.
Strong executive presentation skills, written communication skills and experience with a variety of computer software applications and data processing systems.
Experience managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders through successful completion within time constraints.
