Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Building Operations and Services, Housing and Conferences Okanagan, this position performs a variety of work in general maintenance and repairs of buildings, grounds, equipment, and performs other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Cleans up and removes garbage from facilities and around waste/recycling enclosures, smoking gazebos and buildings
  • Repairs and modifies student room, office and common space furniture
  • Carries out removal of snow from residence sidewalks, common pedestrian areas and applies sand de-icing in a timely manner to enhance safety on campus
  • Provides emergency response to building issues resulting from leaks, plugs and floods
  • Installs, maintains and makes minor repairs to, Salto lock system, door hardware, safes, tools, kitchen appliances and equipment
  • Reviews and repairs plumbing fixtures including: replacement of toilets, urinals, taps-sets, shower fixtures and unclogging of toilets, showers, kitchen and bathroom sinks
  • Liaises repairs and maintenance activities with internal (electricians, engineers and fire safety) and external (plumbing, HVAC, electrical, appliance repair, flooring, paint etc.) contractors
  • Provides on demand and project related carpentry work including but not limited to the repair and installation of interior and exterior door issues, installation of shelving, cabinetry countertops, monitor mounts, whiteboards, trim and flexible baseboards
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, and performs minor repairs and basic level maintenance of heating and cooling equipment
  • Maintains and repairs residence grounds
  • Reviews and repairs electrical systems including: light bulb replacement and resetting of breakers
  • Performs annual testing and identification of fire extinguishers as well as replacement or refilling, and recertification in accordance with the BC Fire code
  • Performs drywall, painting and floor covering repairs to damaged and worn areas
  • Provides on demand and project related concrete repairs and improvements including assessment of stairs, sidewalks, curbs and common areas

Job Requirements:

  • High school graduation or equivalent, plus up to and including one year post-secondary trades related training; over two (2) years of related experience involving building maintenance work and/or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Experience in building maintenance including carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical and grounds maintenance
  • Class 5 drivers license
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, plan and execute work order requests
  • Ability to identify and execute preventative maintenance
  • Knowledge of computerized maintenance programs
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment
  • Ability to act in a tactful and diplomatic manner
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work
  • May be required to work uncomfortable and awkward positions
  • Required to lift up to 50lbs occasionally
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle
  • Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods, such as lock procedures, fall protection and confined space
