Job Responsibilities:

You will serve as a Journeymen Marine Inspector (JMI) and Verifying Officer (VO) within the Prevention Department at Sector Puget SoundThe MI will perform as the civilian resident Prevention Department’s source for continuity of previous inspection policies, technical issues, special program support activity and a primary inspection representative with the maritime industry responsible for commercial vessel safety.

  • Conducting reviews of vessel’s plans, safety management systems and operating systems to determine compliance with regulations and applicable standards.
  • Determining that vessels being inspected have the proper documents and certificates on board and in effect.
  • Inspecting all required navigation, intra-vessel communication, alarm, lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention systems on a vessel to ensure that they are operating properly and in compliance with applicable national and international standards.
  • Ensuring the required inspection documentation is prepared and appropriate orders drafted specifying any required changes, repairs or operational limitations for the vessel and its equipment.
  • Meeting special vessel inspection requirements or workload, the Marine Inspector may be assigned to field sub-units (e.g., drydocking facilities, fabrication facilities, portor industry plants) to direct the work of the unit.
  • Preparing briefing papers, technical analyses, and option evaluations for the Officer-in-Charge, Marine Inspection, where inspection decisions may have broad impact on an industry are controversial in nature or are expected to be appealed to higher authority.

Job Requirements:

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

Specialized experience includes: Reviewing technical vessel design and construction plans to determine compliance with regulations; resolving maritime vessel inspection controversies; identifying hazardous conditions and prescribed corrective actions; and evaluating the compliance of foreign passenger vessel safety management systems with the International Safety Management Code.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
