Job Description:

The North Carolina Department of Revenue is currently recruiting for two (2) Revenue Officer I positions in the Taxpayer Assistance and Collection Division. The primary purpose of this position is to increase compliance by ensuring the appropriate amount of tax is reported and paid by each taxpayer. This is accomplished by providing professional customer service to taxpayers as well as timely and appropriate enforcement action when necessary. This position adheres to NC statutes and the Department’s policies and procedures. This position routinely communicates with taxpayers, attorneys, tax consultants, corporate managers, CPAs, and other agency personnel. The position plays a vital role in the Department’s efforts to educate taxpayers and enforce all collection provisions authorized by NC statute. This employee must remain abreast of all current revenue laws and any changes thereof.

Job Responsibilities:

Enforcing North Carolina’s tax laws. Enforcement action and legal civil remedies may include issuing garnishments, tax warrants, certificates of tax liability (liens), levy warrants, sales and use revocation, corporate suspension;
Providing assistance to taxpayers via telephone, correspondence or in person;
Utilizing legal remedies to collect liabilities or secure returns;
Utilizing professional judgment to decide when to initiate civil action and what civil actions to employ in order to bring a case to a successful resolution;
Working independently to examine, research, verify, and evaluate financial statements, returns, and other data;
Initiating criminal charges against a taxpayer for willful failure to file and/or pay North Carolina taxes. Evaluating claims of financial hardship;
Determining acceptable repayment terms through a variety of methods including installment payment agreements;
Working with taxpayers and their representatives to determine tax liabilities and educate the public on state tax matters;
Assisting and educating all taxpayers to promote compliance with State revenue laws;
Providing technical knowledge and self-help options to taxpayers;
Determining tax liability as it relates to business non-filer assessments;
Making adjustments on accounts based on research or documents provide by taxpayers;
Communicating via telephone (inbound and outbound calls and phone queue) with taxpayers to assist and resolve matters related to tax liabilities, issues, or questions;
Reviewing, evaluating, and addressing written correspondence; and
Maintaining a high level of technical tax law knowledge and the processes, procedures and methodology required in the administration of each of the different tax schedules.

Job Requirements:

  • Candidates who possess at least six (6) completed credit hours of accounting coursework.

All degrees must bereceived from appropriately accredited institutions to be considered relevantto qualify. Transcripts, degree evaluations and cover letters may be uploadedwith your application. At the time of offer, selected candidates who obtainedtheir education outside of the United States and its territories will beexpected to provide adequate documentation for DOR to validate their academicdegrees as equivalent to a degree conferred by a regionally accredited collegeor university in the United States.

Qualification & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Business/Public Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
